MEMOIRS FROM THE ASYLUM  KENNETH WEENE

REVIEWED BY KAREN VAUGHAN

This book will make you chuckle, cry and scratch your head. It will make you question why the neglect and abuse in a state mental institution is prevalent and ignored. Memoirs will make you wonder why people get into the field of mental health and psychiatry only to become burned out shells happy to bring on the valium so they don’t have to deal with the emotional detritus that was once some one’s mind.

The author has painted a vibrant picture what life is like on the inside. It’s not like the patients asked for what was happening to them; life happened to them for various reasons, a break caused by the death of Marilyns mom, the sexual abuse she suffered as a child and her brothers death as well.  The death of the narrators close friend and cousin caused his breakdown and commitment. There are other patients with similar stories. Then there is Doctor Buford, a first year resident who feels like a failure as he is not in a cushy private practice dealing with rich head cases so his wife can be happy.

There are laughs in this book and serious drama all pulled together to give the reader pause to think about this stuff.  Kenneth Weene has pulled stories from a private practice and years of counselling others to make a great novel for our times. Kudos and five stars to the author for a brilliant tale.

excerpt from Getting Larry’d

Filed under: Uncategorized — Karen vaughan @ 11:08 pm

CHAPTER ONE

I was just getting in the door as the phone rang.

Coming—keep your pants on!

“Hello?” I gasped into the phone.

The voice on the other end was nasally and rasping. Dr. Shortland needs to see you Ms. Caffrey.”

“What about?” the word need ramped up my anxiety level big time.

“Your mammogram Ma’am.”

Shit! This is bad I just know it is.

“When?”

“Is nine am tomorrow ok?”

Nine am was perfect as I could get out of the heinous production meeting at the station. I could claim it was a command meeting and if I didn’t show a SWAT team was going to storm in and haul me off…well whatever I would think of something.

“Yes that’s fine.”

I clicked off but then it hit me. I may be dying! The reality of it all hit me like a frying pan in the face.  Okay I was thinking in the extreme but this is what I do.  I sat down hard on the couch for a good sulk and took inventory of what could be done to get me through the night. A mental checklist included wine, ice cream, call Larry, call Leslie. Yep these will save what’s turned into a totally putrid day.

I checked my fridge for wine, yes I still had some Chardonay left from my pampered chef party. Ice cream turned out to be a full tub of sex in a tub (what you get when you mix sex in a pan with death by chocolate). Sometimes it is better than the real thing. Note I did say sometimes.

Leslie is my very best friend from our college days some twenty years ago. We have been several of her break ups and my marriage to and divorce from Paul the pathetic and her marriage to Dave, and subsequent off-spring. Thankfully, she stopped at four or I was having her committed. She went one better and sent Dave to get fixed.

Larry is my long standing buddy from grade school. He is a card carrying gay man who plays football for fun and games. He is not the least bit effeminate and really ripped for a forty seven year old man.  My friends want a fix up and I just laugh and they cry in their wine when I tell them he is pitching for the other team.  Larry is a day trader and does quite well. He dated various guys and nearly got married to Fritz until he found Fritz in the shower at the club with the tight end of his team.  Both men were sporting black eyes and broken noses.  Added to the injuries, Larry told management said they were trying a new position of the Kama sutra when the accident occurred. Both men were too embarrassed to deny the allegations.  Did I mention Larry has an attitude?  I have other friends that could get me through this ordeal but none as well as Larry and Leslie. Calls were made and they both showed up with an overnight bag and extra wine(now that is a friend indeed!)

“Atana, oh my God I can’t imagine being in your shoes right now and nor do I want to but I’m here for ya babe!” Leslie hugged me with the fervor of a mama grizzly bear.

Larry was next with a less crushing hug, stroked my back and kissed my forehead. “You okay, honey?”

“No but it is nothing you guys can’t help along with wine, ice cream and good Chinese take out.”

“Then that’s what we shall have my lady, along with a kick ass action film. I decree nothing that will evoke tears.”

I nodded while Larry uncorked the wine, and Leslie called Wongs Szechuan.

I explained that it was just results of the mammogram I had two weeks ago.

“They didn’t call right away so I assumed I had dodged the bullet. My bad I guess.”

We were sitting on the couch and I was flanked by my friends. Leslie was stroking my back and Larry held my hand.

“Well,” said Leslie. “I am going with you in a tone that simply brooked no argument.”

“Thanks sweetie, I was going to ask if you could anyway.”

This was the first major crisis since the divorce itself and I was grateful for the support. Paul wouldn’t have been there anyway as there were deals to be made and other women to be laid, the ass!

To give you an idea of what kind of husband the little shit wasn’t, when I got my appendix yanked he was on a business trip that would be the pinnacle of his fortune 500 career; he refused to get on a plane and fly home for me. The conversation was over when he said SUCK IT UP and hung up on me. Paul was never a guy to handle a weakness in his family or business subordinates. He never once rubbed my back during PMS or stroked my head as I yacked up dinner due to food poisoning instead I was admonished for ruining a business dinner when he was bucking for partnership in the accounting firm. He didn’t get it and blamed me. What I found out later was that he didn’t get it as Mr. Weintraub thought he was a first class schmuck with the sensitivity of a slug. “The Grinch had more heart” stated the disgusted CEO.

I am glad he is not around for this as I would get zero support during chemo and all bets would be off if I had to take meds that would make me fat or if I lost my boobs to surgery.  I wasn’t a small woman when we were married five years ago. He chided me constantly.  “It won’t look good if I have to drag a fat broad around on my arm.”  Paul started hiring escorts after that for events stating that I had to work and he had my blessing.  The escorts would have been fine if he had kept it at that.  I found him cheating with one in the coat check section when I was able to come to the office party late.  I stopped going to events, work or no work but the chea xs cting just got worse.

So I started being more self-reliantgh and not worrying what or whom Paul was doing. I moved into the spare bedroom in our house. Funny thing was Paul didn’t notice my absence and stopped coming in for conjugal visits.  If he had I would have stopped him without at least three layers of protection.  Soon after that I filed for divorce citing adultery and alienation of affections. Paul objected do to slanderous and libelous behavior. His boss acted on my behalf and fired him for said behavior;  yet another reason for the asshole to be pissed off at me.

I developed a titanium hide and his words and behaviors bounced off me like bullets off Superman.  My friends became part of my family. Without Paul to kick me around my stress went down considerably at least until now.  So if Larry and Leslie wanted to be my rocks I would let them.

You need sleep Larry said after a few hours of talking and watching movies. “Let’s get you tucked in.”

I really dreaded going to bed. I was afraid I would lay there and fret all night thinking the very worst of my situation. Leslie agreed to sleep with me just as we had during college sleep overs. Larry set himself up in the living room.  “If ya need Darlin’ just holler ok?”

“Stop worrying Larry with you and Leslie here I should be fine.”

Miraculously I slept like the dead without incident.  I was up at seven after eight hours of sleep. I got showered and fixed up my usual fruit and yogurt.  Leslie came in, did the same and cracked her usual diet soda.

“Morning sunshine!” Leslie was being way too cheery.

Larry said nothing as effusive happiness would earn him a punch in the head.  “A wise man knows when the shut the hell up!

I grimaced at best and mumbled something about D-day.  Or worse it could be Hiroshima or Pearl Harbour (where were these references to war coming from?) oh right it was possible I could be waging war with some really nasty cancer cells.  I would declare nuclear annihilation on them if it came to that.  I was going into this appointment in full battle gear –hope for the best but prepare for the worst.  I was really proud of myself for not crumbling totally.  Not yet anyway.

DEADLY TRAFFIC BY MICKEY HOFFMAN

DEADLY TRAFFIC  MICKEY HOFFMAN

Kendra DeSola is knee deep in the brown stuff. While off on stress leave from her teaching job at Standard high she manages to get involved when some teenage girls go missing. Kendra has set up a dog walking service and one of her clients is in the thick of an immigration scam.  Bad things happen to those living in the margins of life. They are used and disposed of for the convenience of the greedy. The bodies start to pile up and Kendra is getting sucked into a seamier view of life.

Ms. Hoffman has brought the problem of immigration scams and human trafficking to the surface in this riveting story.   We see the problem from the point of view of a teacher who deals with disadvantaged children and those who can’t defend themselves against those out to exploit them. Immigrants are used and thrown away at the whims of those out for themselves. With a few interesting surprises in the story things are summed up nicely and good prevails over evil at least until Kendra gets herself into another mess.

I highly recommend DEADLY TRAFFIC to those who loved SCHOOL OF LIES.  I look forward to further Kendra DeSola mysteries.  It is poignantly written with a great amount of action and suspense. A definite 5 star read.

2044 love goes to war

2044-Love goes to war.

Chapter 1-Avrils Journal

First entry-April 8, 2044

My name is Avril Cote. I am 18 years old. I am a crack mechanic and I work for my uncle Michel. When I am not getting greasy working on cars I can be found in the orchard helping Mamere( grandma) and Maman checking on the apple trees and helping at harvest time.

I am a bit of a loaner and I spend a lot of time reading and helping with my younger siblings. My father is an astronaut and is currently stationed at one of twenty space stations in the galaxy. This space station is actually a fancy hotel for space tourists willing to pay through the nose for the privilege to see the planets up close and personal. Tired of world tours of earth, the elite started signing up through Virgin air in the early part of the century and since then prices have decreased to allow everyday people to tour the universe.

I read a lot of science fiction fantasy written in the twentieth century which by now is more fact than fiction. I look up at the stars every night after talking to dad on the com-phone which is based on the early MSN instant messengers and Skype.  Just being able to see dad daily is easy to deal with the fact that dad is a few light years away circling the rings of Arvedon 5. So when I look up at the night sky I feel his presence.

Well it’s getting late and I have to be at Michels shop to help him repair some rich politician’s hovercraft. Prime Minister Joshua Alberteaux is in office and has totally over hauled the energy industry in order to be more environmentally responsible. We are fitting all hovercrafts with solar panels to help conserve fossil fuels.  Well good night I will write more tomorrow–Avril

Chapter 2

Arvedon 5 5 –Colonel Cotes log

My name is Armand Cote and I am the Commanding officer of the space station Sorcerer.

It is 2100 hours, Friday April the 8th and I have just gotten of the com-unit with my family. My wife Juliette is as beautiful as ever as are my two stunning daughters Avril and Adrielle. My son Charles is turning into a strapping young man. We exchanged pleasantries while I tried to hide what was wrong with me. I am sick with worry over a developing crisis on Arvedon 5’s surface. An alien race named the Colassians has discovered that we are mining an ore ten times more powerful than uranium mined on earth. When the uranium is used up we are hoping that Halcetite will be able to provide earth with nuclear energy.  My family thinks I am running a tourist station for space travelers. I had to keep my mission here top secret in order to protect them on earth. The Colassians would stop at nothing to destroy Earth in order to keep the Halcetite for themselves. If war breaks out, I can tell you this; we are screwed!

I will, along with the others keep up the façade that all is well up here. In reality we are literally shaking in our boots.  Several of the other commanders are threatening a mutiny or suicide if the evil Colassians attack. We all have cyanide pills and deadly night shade capsules just in case. However, we don’t plan to go down without fighting the good fight. We need help and fast and a resistance is mounting on the surface. Jupitarians have declared us and the Venetians as allies in the fight.  I can’t hide our circumstances much longer and it will soon time to call in the marines.

I am hoping I can keep Avril out of this war although she is of age and would make a fine warrior. I would feel better if she could stay home in Barr Haven to help her mother and grandma with the children and the orchard.  However, I have no control over who gets drafted. Avril will do the right thing and fight to live and remain free.

I must go now and help secure the station for the night. This means ensuring that the shuttle craft are locked in the bays and that the cargo holds are battened down. Goodnight and Godspeed.

Agent of Artifice by S. Evan Townsend

AGENT OF ARTIFICE  S. EVAN TOWNSEND

Review by Karen Vaughan

Mike Vaughan is an adept working for the CIA trying to bring down Fidel Castro and his commie minions. Mike has special skills besides shooting a gun and seducing women along the way. He can cast spells to heal, kill and save his own hide. Set in the turbulence of The Bay of Pigs and The Cuban Missile crisis this story is full of high adventure and esponiage. Mike has to fight of mobsters, and the power hungry leader of the meta association.

This is a real page turner as we watch Mr. Vaughan get involved in one of the most turbulent times in modern American history. The cold war was never so cold as the commies take over a Caribbean paradise.  The story spans from 1958-1964. I really enjoyed this nail-biter.  Any  history buff would enjoy this fictional account of the era. I give this five gold spells

Of time and place B.R. Freemont

OF TIME AND PLACE B.R. FREEMONT

The story takes us through a mans life through two different time lines and flows back and forth through affairs and his work at the FEDERAL ENGERY DEPARTMENT. There he meets Kate Hastings an enigmatic and forceful woman who seeks him out as a friend and a respected colleague. There are twists and turns through out the relationship. He quits the FED and moves to Savannah and enters into an affair with a student after his marriage conks out. Kate calls upon him to help her out a few times throughout the story, Even after he meets his soul mate.

This is a well woven story written from the mans point of view. The author lets us see how he handles life and love. The characters are rich and three dimensional. James, Kate and Pat are people you want to befriend even though Kate can be self centered in her dealings. For me the story started off slow but it picked up momentum. I actually hated for the story to end. I recommend this to anyone who loves to explore relationships and the complexities of life.  4 gold stars.

Rivetting romantic suspense

Mind over Matter by S.J. Clarke.

This is a romantic suspense story with paranormal aspects as described by the author.  Rebecca McKenneys daughter was kidnapped at the age of 3. Everyone except Rebecca has accepted the fact that she is gone for good. Now she is having visions that her little girl is alive but in grave danger. Enter Dan Cooper, the former FBI agent who Rebecca claims gave up too soon. Dan is now an independent security consultant whom Rebecca approaches with new information that would help reopen the case.

Sparks fly between them as they discover their mutual attraction while searching for her daughter.

This is one of those books that is very hard to put down. There is plenty of suspense and a great romance between the two characters. I love stories with happy endings after a long fought battle to save children.  Mind over matter has all of this and more that while simultaneously keeps you on the edge of your seat turning page after page and heading toward a cold shower. 5 gold stars for this one. Bravo to the author.

Summer of Fire KAREN RIGLEY

SUMMER OF FIRE—KAREN RIGLEY

Washington state is dryer than a bone and wildfires are burning threatening towns and homes. Kalina Dahls love life is in a similar state. Kalina has no life outside of her doll making business and taking care of a disabled brother injured in the Gulf war. She refuses to get involved with anyone as she doesn’t think her brother could handle any intrusions in his limited life. This goes on until a tall redheaded stranger walks into her store and sets her world upside down. Randy Carson has a few secrets of his own and a job to do involving Kalina and her family.  Also enter Jill, Kalinas best friend who has a thing for the disabled Steven.

This is a great story of carrying on in the face of adversity. There are two romances in amongst the wildfires that are also smoldering along with Stevens bad attitude.  The book explores the horrors of post war trauma.  I recommend the book to hopeless romantics everywhere. 5 red hearts

PEACE LOVE AND MURDER—NANCY HOLZNER

Bo Forrester is a regular guy who just happens to drive cab in upstate New York. On a routine pick up his world is turned upside down. He is pulled over for a routine speeding violation when one of his fares gets paranoid and takes off after leaving a baggy of pot in the cab, an extensive search turns up a body in the trunk. The body is that of a wealthy philanthropist murdered execution style. Bo learns what its like to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when he becomes suspect numero uno. Added to that is the fact that the renegade deputy who pulled him over wants to nail his butt to the crime. Bodies pile up when the attempts to cover up the crime are discovered and Bo has another murder pinned on him. Eventually he and Deputy Houser team up to find the killer and clear his name.

Peace, love and murder is one of those books a die hard mystery lover will not be able to put down. I know I had trouble.  It is one of those mysteries where you root for the innocent to be vindicated and the real culprits brought to justice. You want a happy ending and will get one. I give this story 5 golden taxis.

Review of Who’ll kill Agnes-Lea Chan

Filed under: Uncategorized — Karen vaughan @ 5:17 pm

WHO’LL KILL AGNES—LEA CHAN

This is a really fun who done it. Agnes Briar committed a crime thirty years that led to her power over friends and family. The only foreseeable flaw in her life his her only sons trailer trash wife whom she plans to get rid of.  Her husband wants Agnes dead for her wealth and he plots with Agnes’ sister Audrey, her companion, Penny and the young wife of Kevin who all have various reasons to hate old Aggie.  When Agnes is found dead by the family chef, face down in her salad greens the town sherriff and his deputy set out to nail the culprit as they didn’t believe it was accidental. The suspect list is a long one but the murderer will surprise you.

This is a fantastic book about getting revenge done in a humorous way. The family is filthy rich and eccentric and soon learn that karma is a bitch and what goes around comes around. You’ll laugh so hard you’ll cry but you might not feel pity for the victims. I recommend this to anyone who loves a whodunit and comedy all in one.  5  X’s are given to a fun story.
